about

Wanton Witch, is set to bewitch the world with her latest musical odyssey, ‘AKU’.

This highly personal release marks her second album and serves as a powerful sequel to her debut, where the previous album delved into her past, ‘AKU’ honestly captures her current state of mind. Born from the depths of her soul and reflecting a profound exploration of identity and existence, this 11-track hauntingly beautiful body of work promises an unparalleled auditory adventure, harmoniously blending diverse sounds, textures, and structures into a distinctly melancholy perspective on reality.

In ‘AKU’, Wanton Witch crafts a sonic tapestry that defies conventions, weaving together her signature fragmented IDM and disjointed experimental elements with entrancing melodies as the heart and leading focus for this album, resulting in a musical experience that is both evocative and transformative.

The album kicks off with ‘Aerial Battle’, a lofty industrial soundscape that transports listeners into an otherworldly realm, questioning life and existence. Setting the stage for the sonic journey that follows. Tracks like ‘Berceuse for the Dead’ and ‘Too Much to Hope For’ mourn against the disturbance of a discontented existence, finding comfort in chaos and confusion. Painting subtle traditional Asian color in a contrasting canvas, creating a sincerely immersive experience. ‘As if you whisper’ plunge into delusion in a trance with euphoric cadences, no way out.

‘Eternal Yesterday’ drifts into a cinematic adventure, reminiscent of a Christopher Nolan soundtrack, toying with her signature mangled deconstructed-club phonemes with pictorial classical motif and affection, while ‘In the Mirror’ portrays a breakthrough sense of self-reflection with its polyphonic orchestral synth compositions. Each track on ‘AKU’ tells a unique perspective as a person unique to herself — ‘Why am I me, here and now?’ inviting listeners to explore Wanton Witch's mind and existence through the lens of her sound-design.

‘Empty Spoon’, grabs attention with its dramatic arrangement and seemingly awkward yet inviting beats, transitioning into a hybrid of an organic and experimental piece of composition. ‘I've Been Here Before I Should Be Used to It’ challenges the listener with its vigorous shifts, incorporating an alluring melodic story and fractured structure to paint a picture of being at a crossroads, same distressed state of mind, feeling as the title suggests — I’ve been here before I should be used to it.

One of the standout tracks, ‘Inverted Images’ surprises with its ballad-like introduction, gradually evolving into a captivating blend of guitar, wistful piano, and heart-wrenching strings, accompanying wanton’s gloomy vocal, creating a cinematic atmosphere that is both haunting and beautiful. The album culminates in ‘Pondan’, a wanton witch signature chaotic dance track where wanton reclaimed the Malay derogatory slur “Pondan” against femme presenting person and trans individuals into a seductively constructed piece that exudes the chaos, pain and beauty. To wrap the album up, wanton invites you to give it up and lose yourself in love with her dark, dance-infused lullaby ‘Learn to love’.

Curated by her endless self-reflection and creative exploration, "AKU" is not just an album—it's a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and redefine genres. Wanton Witch's fearless approach to sound and her ability to seamlessly blend contrasting elements has resulted in a beautifully honest musical piece of work.
